6th Birthday Party Ideas
October 26, 2026 · By the Birfy team

Six-year-olds can follow rules, play team games and get properly excited about a theme. They're also starting to have close friends of their own, so a sixth birthday party is often the first one that really feels like "their" party.
Start with the invitation
At six, kids want a say in the design. Some favorites for this age:
A few wording ideas:
Six is so fun! Join us to celebrate Oliver's 6th birthday.
Get your kicks: Emma is turning 6!
Six candles, one big party. You're invited to Jack's birthday!
Party basics
- Timing: 2 hours, maybe 2.5 for an active party.
- Guests: school friends, often 6 to 12 kids. Many parents drop off at this age; put "drop-off" or "parents welcome" on the invitation so nobody has to guess.
- Helpers: plan on one adult for every five or six kids, especially for active games.
Activity party ideas
Six is a great age for a party built around one activity:
- Science party: slime, baking soda volcanoes and simple experiments.
- Sports party: soccer, gymnastics or a mini Olympics.
- Art party: canvas painting, tie-dye or pottery painting.
- Cooking party: decorate pizzas or cupcakes.
- Superhero training camp: an obstacle course, capes and a "villain" piñata.
- Outdoor adventure: a nature scavenger hunt in the park.
Games
- Capture the flag (simple version) or tag games.
- Scavenger hunt with written clues they can start reading.
- Minute-to-win-it challenges: stack cups, move candy with a straw, bounce a ping pong ball into a cup.
- Relay races.
- Charades with pictures or simple words.
Six-year-olds are getting more competitive, so mix team games with ones where everyone gets a prize.
Food
Pizza, hot dogs, fruit, and a theme cake. A make-your-own station (pizza, tacos or cupcake decorating) doubles as an activity.
Party favors
Something they made at the party is the best favor: their slime, painting or tie-dye shirt. Otherwise, one useful item, like a book, a ball or an art kit, beats a bag of small trinkets.
Gifts
With a bigger guest list, a wishlist helps avoid ten of the same toy. Or try a book swap or "no gifts, please". See our no-gifts wording ideas.
When you're ready to invite everyone, Birfy gives you a design, RSVPs and a gift wishlist in one link you can text or email to parents.
