3rd Birthday Party Ideas
October 26, 2026 · By the Birfy team

Three is a magic age for birthdays. Your child can tell you exactly what they want, they love being the center of attention, and they can finally join in simple games. A third birthday party can be a bit bigger and more playful than the first two, while still keeping things short and toddler-friendly.
Start with the invitation
Let your three-year-old help choose the design. Third Birthday was made just for turning three, and you can add their photo right on the invite:
A few wording ideas:
Three cheers for Charlie! Join us to celebrate his 3rd birthday.
Look who's THREE! Come play, eat cake and celebrate Sofia.
Three-rific news: Ethan is turning 3! Join us for a party full of fun.
Let them choose the theme
Three-year-olds love having a say. Offer two or three options and let them pick: dinosaurs, construction, unicorns, superheroes or their favorite show are all popular. They'll be proud that it's "their" party.
Party basics
- Timing: late morning or after naptime, about 2 hours long.
- Guests: a handful of friends from daycare or preschool plus family. A common rule of thumb is your child's age plus one, so three or four little friends, though many families invite more.
- Parents stay: at this age, most parents stay with their child, so plan food and seating for adults too.
Games three-year-olds can play
Keep games short, simple and non-competitive. Everyone should win something:
- Freeze dance: dance while the music plays, freeze when it stops.
- Treasure hunt: hide large, colorful items in one room or the yard.
- Parachute play: a play parachute or a big sheet, with balls bouncing on top.
- Animal moves: hop like a bunny, stomp like a dinosaur, waddle like a penguin.
- Bubble chase: kids chase and pop bubbles.
- Simple crafts: decorate a paper crown, a cupcake or a cookie.
Food
- Kid favorites: pizza, mini sandwiches, fruit and veggie sticks.
- Food safety: cut grapes and hot dogs lengthwise into small pieces, and skip whole nuts and hard candy for little ones.
- A theme cake or cupcakes. Three-year-olds love candles, so practice blowing them out beforehand.
Make the birthday child feel special
- A crown, sash or special shirt for the day.
- Let them hand out the party favors.
- Sing to them right before the cake, with everyone gathered round.
- Ask guests to bring a drawing or a card they made, instead of or along with a gift.
Party favors
Bubbles, stickers, a small book, a coloring page with chunky crayons, or a toy that matches the theme. Avoid small parts for this age.
Gifts
A short wishlist helps guests choose something your child will love and avoids duplicates. If the toy shelves are already full, "no gifts, please" or a book swap work well too.
When you're ready to invite everyone, Birfy gives you a third birthday design with your child's photo, RSVPs and a gift wishlist in one link.
