9th Birthday Party Ideas

October 26, 2026 · By the Birfy team

Nine-year-olds are almost tweens. They care about what their friends think, they love a challenge, and they're ready to help plan, or even run, parts of their own party.

Start with the invitation

At nine, kids may want something bold or simple rather than cute. Let them choose a photo for the invitation, or design one themselves in a drawing app and use it as the background.

A few wording ideas:

Nine is fine! Join us to celebrate Ava's birthday.

Cloud nine: come celebrate Daniel turning 9!

Nine lives, one party. You're invited to Kate's birthday!

Let them take the lead

Ask your nine-year-old to plan with you: the guest list, the activity, the menu. Set a budget and let them make choices within it. Many kids this age love making a schedule or a playlist for the party.

Party basics

  • Guests: often a smaller group of close friends, 4 to 10 kids.
  • Timing: 2 to 3 hours, or a sleepover.
  • Drop-off: standard, with parent contacts and allergy info collected ahead.

Party ideas for nine-year-olds

  • Escape room, at a venue or built at home with puzzles and locks.
  • Laser tag, trampoline park or a ninja gym.
  • Cooking competition: teams make pizzas or decorate cakes, with a parent judge.
  • Science party: rockets, slime, or a "mad scientist" lab.
  • Game night: board games, a video game tournament, and snacks.
  • Outdoor adventure: a hike, a scavenger hunt in the park, or a beach day.
  • Spa or makeover party: face masks, nail painting and smoothies.
  • Sleepover: movies, a craft, pancakes in the morning.

Games

  • Scavenger hunt with phone photos: teams photograph items from a list (using a parent's phone).
  • Minute-to-win-it challenges.
  • Charades, Pictionary or trivia about the birthday kid.
  • Capture the flag at dusk with flashlights.
  • Mystery party games made for kids: everyone plays a character and solves the case.

Food

A make-your-own bar (tacos, pizzas, sundaes) is a favorite. For a sleepover, add a late snack and a pancake breakfast.

Party favors

At nine, favors are optional. A small useful item, a photo from the party, or the thing they made is plenty.

When you're ready to invite everyone, Birfy gives you your own photo invitation, RSVPs and a gift wishlist in one link you can text or email to parents.
