Are Siblings Invited to a Kid's Birthday Party?

October 26, 2026 · By the Birfy team

Siblings are one of the trickiest parts of kids' birthday parties. Hosts worry about cost and space; guests' parents worry about childcare. A little clarity on both sides avoids awkward moments at the door.

The general rule

Unless the invitation says siblings are welcome, assume the invitation is for the child named on it. That's the safe default for both hosts and guests.

That said, it often depends on age and setting:

  • Toddler and preschool parties: parents usually stay, so younger siblings often come along with them. Many hosts expect it.
  • Venue parties (trampoline parks, play centers): these usually charge per child, so siblings typically aren't included unless the host says so.
  • Casual home or park parties: siblings are often welcome. Hosts sometimes say "the more the merrier".
  • Drop-off parties: siblings don't come, since parents aren't staying.

If you're hosting

Say it on the invitation

One short line prevents most confusion:

Siblings are welcome to join the fun!

This is a drop-off party for Ava's classmates. We're keeping it to the invited kids only.

Younger siblings are welcome to stay with their parent. We'll have a few extra favors!

If you're not sure, plan a small buffer

At an at-home or park party, a few extra slices of pizza and favor bags cover the occasional surprise sibling without stress.

Be kind if a sibling shows up anyway

If a sibling arrives unexpectedly at a home party, it's usually easiest to welcome them. At a venue that charges per child, it's fine to quietly say something like, "The venue only booked spots for the invited kids, but they're welcome to hang out with you in the parents' area."

If you're a guest's parent

  • Ask before you bring a sibling. "Would it be okay if Max's little sister came along? Totally fine if not!" gives the host an easy out.
  • Offer to pay for a sibling's spot at a venue party.
  • Keep the sibling with you if they're not part of the party activities, especially toddlers.
  • Don't be offended by a no. Space and budgets are real limits.

Twins and siblings in the same class

If siblings are in the same class, or are twins, invite both. Inviting one twin and not the other almost always hurts feelings.

How Birfy helps

On a Birfy party page, your note to guests appears right on the invitation, so you can say clearly whether siblings are welcome. When parents RSVP, they list the kids' names and the number of adults, so you know exactly who's coming.
