How Long Should a Kid's Birthday Party Be?

October 26, 2026 · By the Birfy team

The short answer: about 90 minutes to 2 hours for most kids' birthday parties. That's long enough for play, food and cake, and short enough that nobody melts down. But the right length depends on your child's age and the kind of party.

By age

AgeSuggested lengthWhy
1 to 21 to 1.5 hoursToddlers tire quickly; plan around naps.
3 to 51.5 to 2 hoursEnough for a few activities, food and cake.
6 to 82 to 2.5 hoursKids can handle more structured games and an activity.
9 and up2 to 3 hours, or a sleepoverExperience parties and sleepovers run longer.

By type of party

  • Venue parties (trampoline parks, play centers, bowling) usually come in fixed packages, often around 1.5 to 2 hours, split between play time and a party room for food and cake.
  • At-home parties are flexible. Two hours is a good target; longer than that and you'll need more activities.
  • Park parties can run a bit longer, since kids can run around, but watch the weather and bathroom access.
  • Sleepovers for older kids typically run from late afternoon to mid-morning the next day. A "late-over", ending at bedtime, is a gentler first step.

A sample 2-hour party schedule

  • 0:00 to 0:20 — Arrival. A simple activity kids can join as they arrive: coloring, a craft table or free play.
  • 0:20 to 1:00 — Main activity. Games, a craft, or the venue's activity.
  • 1:00 to 1:30 — Food. Pizza or snacks, then cake and singing.
  • 1:30 to 1:50 — Second activity or free play. A piñata, a dance party or outside time.
  • 1:50 to 2:00 — Goodbyes. Favors at the door as parents arrive.

Tips for keeping it on time

  • Put the end time on the invitation, not just the start time, so parents know when to come back.
  • Do cake about two-thirds of the way through, before energy crashes.
  • Open gifts after the party, not during it. It saves time and avoids comparisons.
  • Have a backup activity in case something finishes early or the weather turns.

Too short or too long?

Under an hour often feels rushed, especially when some guests arrive late. Over three hours (for young kids) usually means tired, cranky children and exhausted hosts. When in doubt, shorter is better: it's always nicer to end while everyone's still having fun.

How Birfy helps

Every Birfy invitation shows the start and end time clearly, and guests can add the party to their calendar with one tap, so parents know exactly when to drop off and pick up.
